DHCP access error on new AD/DHCP/DNS setup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Setting up my first 2016 AD/DNS/DHCP server - never really had these issues with 2012. The error is this:

An error event occurred. EventID: 0x0000040B
                Time Generated: 01/12/2019 13:19:11
Event String: The DHCP service was unable to create or lookup the DHCP Users local group on this computer. The error code is in the data.
An error event occurred. EventID: 0x0000040C
                Time Generated: 01/12/2019 13:19:11
Event String: The DHCP server was unable to create or lookup the DHCP Administrators local group on this computer. The error code is in the data.

I verified the groups are there. I added domain users to the dhcp users group, and domain admins to the dhcp admin group, just to be safe. I've also removed/added the role. It seems to be handing out IP addresses to some clients (I haven't turned off the DHCP on the router yet. I'm remote and will probably manually configure networking on clients to be safe.)

Should I even be worrying about this error? Also, I double checked the DHCP credentials to make sure they were correct.

  • Hi,

Concerning the error you get after DHCP migration, you can resolve it by restarting the DHCP service, to get more details you can refer to the Following link : Event ID 1036 — DHCP Users Group Configuration

  • I figured you would have assumed I've tried this. Restarted several times, removed and re-added, rebooted several times, error persists.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your question.
These two error is event ID 1035&1036.
As per above event, DHCP role is installed on the server, but the Security group “DHCP Users” and “DHCP Administrators” are missing in Active Directory users and computers.

Check if the security groups “DHCP Users” and “DHCP Administrators” are missing in Active Directory (AD). If you can find the security groups restart the DHCP server service and check if the error events have stopped generating.

If you cannot find the security group you can Create the Security group “DHCP Users” and “DHCP Administrators”.
