SQL Server 2016 - Install on Windows 2016 Server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are installing a windows SQL 2016 Server and we want to install windows SQL 2016 on a Windows 2016 Server.  Looking at the Volume licensing it appears it says Windows SQL 2016 runs on Windows 2012 R2 but there is no mention if it will run on a Windows 2016 Server.

Does anyone have any insight if Windows SQL 2016 will run on a Windows 2016 Server (standard)?

  • You can install SQL Server 2016 on Windows server 2016. And I must tell you that you are using wrong nomenclature it is not called as "Windows SQl Server 2016" it is just called as SQL Server 2016. Windows is only used while referring to OS

  • I think the SQL Server 2016 was released earlier than Windows Server 2016. That may be why it did not mention SQL Server 2016 supported by Windows Server 2016. It should work.

  • Hi Clarklnlt,

It is supported to install SQL Server 2016 on Windows Server 2016, this is mentioned in the document: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sql-server/install/hardware-and-software-requirements-for-installing-sql-server, this document applies to SQL Server 2016 and later.

    Best Regards,
