Project 2010 visual report, calculating work 3 times when adding a userdefined field RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, maybe there's an error in the visual report:

report: Resource Work Summary Report (Project 2010)

    1. build an userdefined field 'outline code' on the resourcetable (something like a resource break down structure)

    2. assign this field to some resources

    3. edit the reporttemplate and add the field 'outline code1'

the work shows the value 3 times

    Any idea?

    Peter

Project 2007 does the calc correctly, same conditions ;)

  • Hello Peter,

If I modify the pivot table to show the Outline code, I do see two lines in the pivot table per resource -- one for the outline and a total row -- is this what you are seeing as well?  I don't quite understand your comment

"the work shows the value 3 times" -- can you explain further?

  • Hello Julie,

I know, my english skill's so bad ;)

the 'resource usage view' calculates an amount of 152 hrs work for a human resource

    1. view the visual report 'Work Summary Report' without any customization :

the pivot in the excel sheet shows the same values as in project: 152 hrs work

    2. edit the template for 'Resource Work Summary Report' and add the custom field (in this case): outlinecode1

the pivot says 456 hrs for the same resource: it seems the value is calculated 152 * 3, isn't it?

In project 2007 I did the same, the calcualted amount is fine ...

  • Hi Peter,

Don't apologize for your English -- it's fine.

I've stepped through what I think you've done and do not get the same error.  Where have you added the Outline Code1 field to the pivot table?  I cannot reproduce the error no matter where I place the field in the pivot table.

I am running Project Professional 2010 32-bit with SP-1 installed.  I am not connected to a Project Server.

Are you up to date on Service pack and any CUs?  See the Update Center for latest information about current cumulative updates.

  • Hi Julie,

the outline code is a userdefined field, assigned to some resources, I built something like a RBS on the projectserver.

I add the field before I start the visual report, the field is added automatically to the pivot created in excel. There is nothing I did additional ;)

Yes, I am up to date, I don't use Projectserver, only Project Prof. 2010 SP-1, same as you do

  • Thanks Peter.  I created the same outline type as you -- I used locations instead of team data but I am still not seeing the issue.  If you remove the field from the excel pivot table -- does the problem go away?

What version of Excel are you using?

  • Hi Mike,

I've tested again and can not replicate what Peter reports.  I have modified the Resource OutlineCode1 field and added a lookup with multiple levels.

I don't see the increase in Work values in the report as Peter does.

  • So the problem is gone?  If so, that is good news.  There were a number of recent software pushes, but to the best of my knowledge, none for Project 2010.

But, the good news is the problem seems to be gone?
