Windows Explorer stops responding when I open a particular folder. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Guys!

I am using Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit installed in HP 6720s Laptop having Core2Duo 1.8 Ghz processor and 1Gb ram.

My problem is that when I open my "movies" folder located in F:(F Drive), Windows explorer stops responding and Explorer Restarts. I have many movies in this folder mostly in .mkv formats.

Other Than this problem every thing is fine in my windows.

Initially I thought this problem is due to KLite Media codec pack which tries to make thumbnails for the movies. I installed it but with no success. I have some other folders for video songs too having matroska(.mkv) videos, but there is no problem with this folder at all.

Does anyone knows how to solve this problem?.........

    Thanks in Advance...

  • Ok, I found the cause. It is DivX which crashes your Windows Explorer:

  • please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:

    http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it. If you can't do this, run regedit.exe and import the registry file there!

When the Windows Explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here. I take a look at the dump with the Debugger, maybe I can see which Shell extension is the cause.

  • Hi I have downloaded the .reg file and imported it to the registry but nothing is working. As for the dump file, My computer doesn't have C drive so there is no C:\Localdumps. In the C drive I have installed Linux Operating System. Windows 7 is installed in E: drive but also there in no e:\Localdumps What should I do now?.........

  • Open regedit.exe and go to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\Explorer.exe

and change the folder C:\localdump to a valid path on your system.

  • As you said I have changed the folder and then opened the troubling folder and got the .dmp file and I have uploaded it to the Skydrive as a RAR compressed file. I hope you will be able to download it because I am using Skydrive for the first time. If it doesn't download, let me know.......... The link is :

  • Hi! i also have the same problem. im thinking if you can help me.

I already did the steps that you gave in these post, so here is the link to the dmp file.

    http://www.4shared.com/file/lm8wlfVj/explorerexe5840.html

    http://www.4shared.com/file/w_RN_rJw/explorerexe784.html

There are two links cuz i somehow opened the folder 2 times and im not sure if there is some difference to both of it. anyway, pls help me. All of my personal files are all in this folder. Thank You!

  • Did you tried removing DivX(which was causing me trouble in my movies folder)? If DivX is the problem and still want to use it (at least the DivX converter) then Uninstall DivX completely. then install K Lite Mega Codec Pack and then install DivX converter only(And skip all other like DivX Codec, Player, WebPlayer Blah..Blah...)

If DivX is not troubling then look in this post which is marked as answer and contact the person who has posted the solution.....

    Bye..
