Disappearing User Profile RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Guys,

I have a weird problem here.  We are in the process of deploying Windows 7 in our environment using KMS activation.  We have a weird problem where by users lose their profiles if their machine has been turned off for a period of time (normally if they have been on holiday).  We initially thought this was becuase we did not have suffient activation count but once we reached 25 machines and they started activating, the problem is still occuring.

When checking C:\Users -  we can see that a new profile has been created but with our domain appended to it.  The older user folder is there but is completly empty.  Checking the registry does not show any .bak files which would indicate a corrupt profile nor does the user receive a message - they just notice all the desktop has reverted back to the default and favourites/printers/folders on desktop have gone missing.

We have been looking into this for a while and it has now causing major issues; so we have stopped our Windows 7 rollout.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi,

According to your description, I suggest to perform these tests to troubleshoot the issue:.

    1. Restart your PC to release the locks on your profile.
    2. Log on with another administrative account
    3. Delete C:\Users\%username%
    4. Delete C:\Users\TEMP
    5. Delete the registry key matching your SID from
    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList". Check the value "ProfileImagePath" to make sure you pick your own profile.
    6. Restart once again.

    Hope that helps.
