Virtual Server 2005 r2 64bit RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just installed Virtual Server 2005 R2 on a 64 bit Windows Server 2003 R2 machine and it loaded fine. I am now trying to load a Virtual machine that will run Windows Essentials 2008 64bit on it and when I go to load it from the iso I keep getting this message Status: 0xc000035a Attemping to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode.

How do I get around this?

I know this is not the right forum for this, but I could not find a Virtual Server forum anywhere on technet. Hopefully someone can redirect this to the proper place.

    Thanks

  • I'm sorry to say that with Windows Server 2003 as the foundation, and using Virtual Server, there is no way around this.  Virtual Server is not capable of running 64-bit virtual machines.  Only 32-bit virtual machines.

What you want to use instead is Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008.  Hyper-V can run 64-bit virtual machines.

Sorry I don't have better news for you there.  But if this is just for a test environment, I highly recommend you download and try out the Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate and us it for your base OS.  Enable the Hyper-V role.  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/r2.aspx
