Enterprise install of IE 11 choaking on KB2729094 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our company is currently in the process of updating Internet Explorer to version 11 using WSUS. Over 60% of the deployments are failing due to KB2729094 (a prerequisite patch). The IE11_MAIN.LOG indicates that the WMI Query is timing out with an error  0x00040004 (262148).   The hotfix has been successfully deployed back on 10/21/2012 and when you enumerate all Quick Engineering hotfixes via WMI, the patch is listed as being successfully installed.  It doesn't appear to be a problem where WMI cannot read the registry key to enumerate this particular hotfix.

One solution is to manually uninstall KB2729094, reboot, and reinstall it.  This defeats the purpose of an enterprise deployment by seamlessly using WSUS to upgrade the corporate web browser. I could create a script to manually uninstall and reinstall the hotfix, but this may cause issues with workstations that already have the patch successfully deployed and IE updated.

Microsoft...what is your solution for this?

  • Hi Matelski,

Did the issue occur with all the machines or the specific one? Did it occur randomly? Are these machines up to date?

If this KB2729094 has been installed, there is a possibility that there is a little delay when querying  this update with the WMI service. As a result, it didn`t detect this update as expected.
We could try to restart the "WMI service " before we try to install the Internet Explorer 11 or try the following script.

    On Error Resume Next
    strComputer = "."
    SET objWMIService = GETOBJECT("winmgmts:\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
    SET colItems = objWMIService.ExecQuery("Select HotFixID from Win32_QuickFixEngineering where HotFixID='KB2729094'")
    FOR EACH objItem in colItems
    Wscript.Echo objItem.HotFixID
    NEXT
    WSCRIPT.ECHO "DONE!"
    WSCRIPT.QUIT

  • The workstation is able to enumerate the query and correctly responds back with the WMI query that the hotfix is located.   I tested other patches other than KB2729094 and WMI was able to correctly enumerate and list that installed patch.

  • Using System Tools "Hyena" I am also able to list all six prereq patches, so it doesn't seem to be an issue that WMI is non-functional or is having a problem reading the registry.

doesn't seem to be an issue that WMI is non-functional or is having a problem reading the registry.

It would be good to know what the implementation of that query is.  FWIW I would use ProcMon to supplement this diagnostic.  Start by filtering with Operation Is WriteFile so you can find out if there are any other more relevant diagnostics.  Otherwise it should be relatively easy to infer the WriteFile event for this one (e.g. based on timestamp and Length) and then use preceding File and Registry access events as possible clues for why it was produced.

    Good luck
