XML files opened from an attached email in Outlook always ask for standard software RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

First of all, sorry for my potentially poor english - I am not a native speaker.

Then to the problem at hand.

We've discovered the following issue at our company:

When a user (any user) receives an XML document attached to an e-mail, and they try to open it directly (double-click), it'll always open the "How do you want to open this filetype" dialog. We choose Excel 2016 and "Always use this program" after which we press OK. It opens up in Excel and everything seems fine.
However. If we try to open an xml file (any) again the same thing repeats itself.

We've checked the registry, default programs, as well as chosen default apps by file type and as protocol.

All of these settings are set to "open with Excel".

    We're currently running office 2016 32bit (365) - windows 10 on these computers

Do any of you people have an idea?

    Sincerely Sigurd

  • Hi Sigurd,

Does this issue continue if we save the XML file to local drive and then double-click the downloaded file to open it?

Will the "How do you want to open this filetype" dialog show up again if we set the default application for XML file to another program, such as Internet Explorer?

Besides, please try set the following registry value to Applications\EXCEL.EXE and then see whether this issue continues.

(Important Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it.)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.xml\UserChoice
    String Value: Progld
    Value: Applications\EXCEL.EXE

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Steve Fan

  • Hello Steve,

First of all, regarding the Registry Key:
I checked the key and it was already set as prescribed.

Regarding the other pro"border:none;font-family:'Segoe UI', 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;outline:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-list-style-type:none;color:#333333;font-size:14px;">Lastly, Yes. If we download a file it'll open correctly. However this is a huge nuisance for the users

    Regards,

    Sigurd
