windows 7 stuck installing updates cannot forcefully shut down laptop RRS feed

  • Question

  • Please if you are a MS tech employee or whatever Please do not send me the same automated response that I "may find this link helpful". I saw that in a post EXACTLY like mine and those links DO NOT HELP. Further, I have no idea how to "forcefully shut down" my laptop (other than to let it run out of battery). I hold the power button down, it turns off and it blinks then I push power button again to turn on and it goes right back to the same update screen=it is stuck!!

I restarted my laptop that by the way I've only had for 5 days,  earlier today to install the 68 (omg!!!) updates..It gets to "Installing update 46 of 68..." and I have to close the laptop and leave current location quick fast in a hurry (I know that's a no-no, so don't fuss). Later I open her up, press power button and the screen still says "Please do not power off ..bla..bla...Installing update 46 of 68". Ok I wait. And wait. 2 hours later still stuck on same screen "..update 46 of 68" . Great I screwed up but I should at least be able to hold down the power key to restart or reboot or whatever, but nooooo still stuck. Nothing nada zip.

    Any suggestions?

Should I just let the battery die?

PRETTY PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME A HALF A*S RELATED AUTOMATATED RESPONSE :) Thank You!

  • Hi,

Given this situation, Please remove all external devices to check. if you have the installation DVD, it is suggested to boot into WinPE via DVD and perform the following steps:

Always use System Restore in WinRE first.

If that does not return you to a working configuration, try using the DISM command to see what update is in a problem state:

    dism.exe /image:d:\ /get-packages

When you run this command, you should see one or more packages listed in a Pending state. check for known issues with the particular update or package. There may be a more direct workaround.

If you are unable to find another solution, use the /cleanup-image switch with DISM to revert the pending actions:

    dism.exe /image:d: \ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Once this is complete, try starting the PC into Windows.

If Windows starts successfully, check for other issues on the computer - disk issue, memory issues, etc. You may need to perform  an in-place reinstall to repair problems with the Windows Installation to prevent similar issues in the future.

    Regards,

  • Similarly, i was trying a restart and now have been on Installing 2 of 63.  Reagrding the recommendation above - You have to be kidding - Why would you assume the average person would have a clue as to what DISM is, i sure as heck don't.   WinRE? Lousy answer - Why don't you just say take to the Geek Squad?
