Outlook error: the certificate used to create this signature does not have the correct usage properties for digitally signing e-mail messages RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am sending a digitally signed mail from an application.

When I receive the mail in outlook I get the following error: "Error: The certificate used to create this signature does not have the correct usage properties for digitally signing e-mail messages."
However if I extract the mail from outlook using EWS managed and then verify the signature and certificate with SignedCms it is ok.
Why does this happen in outlook?

  • Hi,

We’d like to confirm the type of your email account first. Both the sending account and the receiving account.

According to your description, I suppose certificates in your Outlook is missing.

We may have to go to the Trust Center to reimport the certificates.
