will it be possible to change a SAC 1807 SCOM install to SCOM 2019 LSTSC when released

All replies

  • Hi,

Upgrading from Semi-Annual Channel to LTSC releases is not supported. For more information, we may refer to the following article:

Overview of System Center release options
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/ltsc-and-sac-overview

    Hope the above information helps.

    Regards,

    Alex Zhu

  • Unfortunately, it isn't. They're treated as different versions with different models and licences, so you have to stick with one.

    Cheers

  • The SAC channel was sold by Microsoft as a channel that would get you the latest features quickly on the system centre products you use

The common wisdom is that this is now only really relevant to Application based software such as containers etc

MS also  did not make it clear that the bi- annual release would be a 'BASE' then a later 'UPDATE' release so you cant jump in at any point , it also seems that MS has ceased development of some of the SC products so the SAC channel is just a huge waste of effort ( SCORCH and SCSM ) the 'new features' in SCOM are also very limited (HTML 5 website is banded as a huge improvement - MS had to do this as it told its customers to stop using Silverlight - so could MS stop pretending that its busy developing these products)

annoyingly the SCO SAC is a total re-install and Attach to SQL DB - MS cant even align install code within SC products

( The URx install of SCOM is a prime example of lazy coding - running SQL scripts and manual MP imports went out with the ARK compared to other monitoring platforms - SCCM seems the only modernised auto update product)

We have already found install bugs in the SAC installer's and also SCO UR5 ( MS informed and say will fix in UR6-not good enough ) so confidence that MS can provide pain free major SAC installs is very low

If the 190X next SAC release is a base , why cant the LTSC base be used and convert the install back - surely this isn't rocket science

We have upgraded a small dev instance of SCOM to SAC and then realised that it would be a huge overhead to have all our 4 main SC products on this channel -updated twice a year with the risks that evolves

we will stay on LTSC and upgrade to 2019 LTSC when released

    Rant over

  • Hi Dannythe,

Thank you very much for the suggestions about the SC products. Hope the product team may hear such a user voice and make some changes in the next release. Thank you again for the suggestion to make the products be better.

    Have a nice day!

  • @Danny:

Your rant is sensible, and in fact I agree with you for the most part. I also am not a big fan of SAC, personally.

Anyway, please mark the thread answered if you've received satisfactory answers.

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers
