office 2007 upgrade from 2003

*** i posted this in the other forum by mistake, sorry for the double posting ****
Hello, I've been trying to use SCE to rollout an office 2007 upgrade to 3 machines. 2 of the test machines have failed, the only install that worked was on the 3rd machine(the SCE server itself) The 2 failures already had office 2003 installed, the one success had no office products installed previously. I've followed instructions on the web and the video on technet, but still no luck. Ideally I would like to use SCE to rollout 2007 to several pc's which already have 2003 installed. I have had good luck with installing 7zip on all machines but office 2007 eludes me. My main frustration is not being able to determine how the install fails, the reports are very bare only listing which machines have failed, not at what stage the failure happened. On the 2 machines that did fail, the upgrade took the better part of the day(several hours) I've updated similar machines in under 30 minutes not using SCE (the boxes are dell optiplex 755's). Any clues? I'm kinda stumped and would appreciate any input.Tuesday, September 16, 2008 7:32 PM

I found out the main issue, seems like whenever there is a restart before the install is finished the install will just hang for several hours.
The reason the server installed was because the install was able to run without interruption. the clients on the other hand were restarted, i had both of them with the "your computer is installing updates and will automatically shutdown" for several hours. If i deploy this to 150-200 pc's will anyone who has to restart before the install has finished be stuck in limbo with the automatic shutdown message? I will post the windowsupdate.log file later today.
Thanks for your reply.Thursday, September 18, 2008 12:47 PM

Hi,
1. Can you deploy other program to the problematic machines?
2. Can you run the same Office 2007 setup program locally on the problematic machines?
Please open the log file " %Windir%\windowsupdate.log" on the problematic machines to check if any error message has been logged.
Thanks.Thursday, September 18, 2008 6:52 AM -

Here's the log from the last few hours. Nothing looks strange, but I'm just looking for blatant errors. If I have uninstalled office 2003 and give this machine a few hours to run, everything deploys fine. I currently have office 2003 installed and set a new depoloyment deadline for the office 2007 package that worked previously. It's been 4 hours since the new approval time for my office deployment and the machine isn't doing anything. So to summarize
If the machine has an existing office 2003 install or is restarted during the 2007 install: the install will always fail...
If the machine has nothing installed and the install completes without being restarted: the install will complete...
The prior scenario doesn't really work for me since I'm trying to rollout an update using SCE.
The deployment package was created on a windows 2003 server VM session, clients are all windows xp sp3, outlook 2007 rollout with a .msp file in the Updates folder to automate the install.
Any ideas guys?
Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
It seems that there's no problem in deploying process. The software package has been downloaded properly to the agent.
Did you try running the package locally on the agent has Office 2003 installed? I'm afraid the the software package has not been produced properly. You can ask the Office expert to check the package to see if there's any problem.
Thanks.

The package runs fines deployed locally. The only issues are:
1. a restart while a package is being deployed
2. if 2003 is already installed, there is no telling when the 2007 upgrade will run.
If a machine does not have a prior install, everything works as it should with my only gripe being problem 1 where a user may mistakenly restart their machine before the 2007 upgrade is completed. I can temporarily work around problem 2 by uninstalling office 2003 before the 2007 upgrade, but still have problem 1 to contend with.
It seems like some of the issues could be avoided if i could more accurately time a rollout, say within a given hour to certain pc's. For now it seems whenever a deadline is given, the next thing i do is just wait and see which machines are updated in the next 24 hours. For example, clicking on pc_XXX and issuing a command for a immediate software deployment.Friday, September 19, 2008 3:43 PM
