In-place upgrade to Windows 7 possible with retail / OEM / OSB / SB versions? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

Is the in-place upgrade to Windows 7 possible with

    a) retail versions
    b) OEM / OSB / SB version?

Or do I have to buy an "upgrade version"? I only found contradictorily information and need some advice from your side.

    Thanks a lot!

  • Only retail versions of Windows 7 can perform an in-place upgrade from a qualifying Windows operating system (i.e. Windows Vista or Windows XP).

  • Hi Carey

Thank you so much for the fast answer.

Sorry to bother you again, but I'm still confused. I asked the same question in the German section of the board as well (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/de-DE/w7itproinstallde/thread/91c38483-88c7-4184-bdb3-ee0125c809b4), and the expert there told me that in-place upgrades with OEM / OSB / SB versions are possible.

So will you please excuse the question: did you try that by yourself or do you know about the source of the information? Just to be sure that I buy the correct version.

    Thanks again,

    Wolfgang

  • Hi Wolfgang

You should have specified your location in your initial post.

Some licensing terms will vary depending on the country where the software is purchased and will be installed. Your best option to get this question answered would be to contact the local German Microsoft support office. Here are the contact details.

  • Hi Ronnie

Thanks for these information. But I have to confess...  ...my location is Switzerland.

Since a cross language in-place upgrade is not possible and I use the U.S. version of Vista, I would like to buy an U.S. OEM version of Windows 7 in the U.S. as well.

My question is not specific for licensing issues but more to make sure that technically the in-place upgrade will be possible with an OEM version.

    Thanks a lot

  • Good News!

My system is running now on Windows 7. Installation was done via in-place upgrade using an OEM version.

Before the upgrade I uninstalled all progs that would - following Microsofts Upgrade Advisor - cause problems.

Although after the purchase I got the information, that only a clean installation is possible it worked fine with the in-place upgrade.

    regards,

    Wolfgang
