Renaming a Domain in Windows Server 2008 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am needing to rename a domain and have never had to do this before.  I have researched the information and found it a bit confusing as to what order the steps have to be accomplished.  Some say it's not difficult while others state that it is very time consuming.  There is no Exchange Server to be concerned about so that hurdle is eliminated.

Can anyone recommend a good link that shows step-by-step the procedure to renaming a domain?  I have tried following a couple of steps but feel I am missing something as the renaming does not complete even though I am not getting any error messages.

    Any suggestions?

  • Hi,

You will need to get in touch with your domain provider.

Furthermore with all the users profile that have been created on the old domain will need to be migrated over to the new domain.

Any active directory server in your organization ?

one thing to consider is you might need to buy a new domain name.

Else perhaps a IP mirroring  to have both domain working at the same time. and slowly de-commission the old domain name.

  • Thanks.

I guess I should have been more specific.  This domain name change is completely internal.  I am changing if from, for example, "domain.com" to "local.domain.com."

This is a lab domain even though it is completely functional, and yes, there are active directories but I can change these.  As far as migrating users, this is not an issue.

As said, I have never had to change a domain name and though I know it's not best practice, I want to change this domain name for experience purposes mainly.  If something goes wrong it won't be any catastrophic failure.

The issue is I am finding conflicting procedures as to how to accomplish this.

  • Hello Steve Flanigan.

I've used the guide at http://www.shariqsheikh.com/blog/index.php/200804/how-to-rename-a-windows-server-2008-domain/ and it worked fine for me.

    Bye.
