Remote Desktop in XP Pro RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We use VNC to connect to our desktops on our LAN and WAN, thing is we find it very choppy and in the end very fustrating.  The best remote desktop tool in seems to be the built in Remote Desktop tool for XP, but it locks the users screen unless they go through that horrible help and support tool.  What are the best free remote desktop tools that are out there?  Or can the remote desktop tool be customised for our helpdesk to use better?

  • Remote desktop uses Remote Desktop Protocol whereas VNC (Virtual Network Computing) uses the RFB protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFB_protocol).  These are two completely different protocols each with advantages and disadvantages.

Remote Desktop is primary meant to be used by a primary user; not really in a shared desktop environment.  VNC, on the other hand, was designed with desktop sharing in mind.

You will have to choose one or the other and accept the inherent limitations.

If you want to use RDP for help desk purposes, you will have to use MSFT provided tools and services or have users send out invitations for help.  Otherwise, most free VNC offerings for XP will have the same issue you already experience.
