Can I upgrade?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I upgraded my computer to Windows 10 1803. Got BSOD. Could not do a system restore or reset the computer. Had to wipe HD clean and do a fresh install. Now I'm stuck on Windows 10 1511. My computer obviously is too old for 1803, so can I upgrade to 1703 or 1709. I had successfully upgrade in time past. Processor is Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 @2GHz Ram is 2GB.

    Thanks

  • I doubt your computer is too old, but it may have old drivers and old FIRMWARE. Make sure your system board firmware is updated to the latest versions. I found that this can fix the issue with BSODs on upgrades. Second, make sure you get the latest drivers for each of your devices (video, sound, network, wifi, etc) BEFORE you upgrade to the latest 1803. 2 GB of RAM is on the low side, but  that is the minimum required.

I'm running a custom box that I built in September 2009 and I'm on 1803.

  • Thanks for your quick reply. When I check my drivers they say they're the latest, but I'll try again and see what happens. Thanks again.

  • Not just drivers - Firmware.

  • I have found that my video controller's driver can't be updated. Not sure whether I should invest in a new one, as sooner or later the whole system will end up with the same problem. By the way,how do I check firmware?

    Thanks
