Windows Explorer stops working during start-up RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having quite a problem with Windows 7 Home edition. Windows explorer crashes during startup and I cannot view or access any desktop icons, the taskbar, or the startup menu. I tried ctrl-alt-del and ran cmd and started explorer but itjust keeps crashing. I have had to use the hyperlinks in the problem details section of the "windows explorer has stopped working" window to access the internet. Thereafter, I have used internet explorer to access my c: drive. I can run programs from there. I have ran antivirus and antimalware programs. Nothing detected. I have ran registry repair programs. Nothing has worked. Not having windows explorer is quite an inconvenience. It won't even run in safe mode. Please help.

  • Hi,

    the Explorer crashes while displaying the tooltips in the Systray:

    explorer!CTrayNotify::_ShowInfoTip

    A lot of people have this in the last days.

    Please start the command prompt (cmd.exe) with admin rights [1] and run sfc [2]:

    sfc.exe /scannow

    Is it able to find and repair broken files? Is the Explorer now working fine?

    best regards

  • It sounds like your windows installation is corrupt have you tried either system restore if you can run programs to take it back to a possibly working state? If not maybe a windows repair maybe the next port of call

  • Hi,

    please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:

    http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer.reg

    and make a double click on the file to import it. If you can't do this, run regedit.exe and import the registry file there!

    When the Windows Explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here. I take a look at the dump with the Debugger, maybe I can see which Shell extension is the cause.

  • I had tried repair. It didn't work. Just tried restore, which I forgot about. Didn't work either. Thanks for your suggestions.
