Windows 8 tablet stuck on "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an Asus VivoTab Smart that comes with Windows 8, and before I can do the 8.1 upgrade, I have to install all 112 updates.  This was going just fine until after it rebooted, and now it's been stuck on the "Failure configuring Windows updates, Reverting changes" screen for about the past 12+ hours.  I restarted it a couple of times by holding down the power button, but it comes right back to the same screen after the Asus splash screen.  Were this a laptop, I know exactly how to fix it (go to Advanced Recovery Options), but since it's a new tablet that I haven't yet connected its Bluetooth keyboard to, I'm basically stuck.  I can't even boot to a flash drive because that requires a keyboard to get to the boot options.

What can I do?  None of the other forum posts related to this work because I don't have a keyboard attached to it and because the OS isn't loaded (can't get the Charms  bar so I can restart it that way or boot into Safe Mode or anything.)

  • All right, I got it figured out - for Windows tablets, holding the Volume Down button while pressing the Power button will give you the Boot Options menu, so I used my 4-port USB hub (tablet has one micro USB port) and plugged in both a Windows 8 recovery disk flash drive and a USB keyboard and mouse and did a System Restore from there.  Updates are still taking eons to install, but at least it's working now.

  • Connect an Ethernet cable to laptop and modem, as the wifi don't work when it's updates in standby mode. My updates took 10 minutes once the cable was connected.

  • Is anyone at Microsoft listening? This is 2014, I know how to do all of this stuff, just like I can do basic repairs on my car, but I don't have the time. It is inexcusable that you continue to produce such execrable products in this day and age. I got this tablet w/ Window 8 for free and it is going to the pawnshop before I defenestrate it. Android or Apple from now on.

I've just seen a tease for Windows 9. No doubt to fix all of the problems associated w/ Windows 8 and requiring more memory and a faster processor. You have got to be effin' kidding me.
