Exchange and RUS issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a problem with several Outlook clients and performance against Exchange 2003 server.
The error client side receives is:
"Trying to get information from Exchange server dc1..."
The scenario is SITE 1 with exchserver1 and dc1 (main site) and SITE 2 with exchserver2 and dc2.
Affected users are on SITE 2 with exchange server on the main site.
As far as I know, the only service that a domain controller may provide to Outlook is global address book which synchronizes Active Directory and Exchange.
What's more, affected users are on a different site than dc1 is located, so I thought I found the answer here:
by creating a new RUS (Recipient Update Services)
This is not possible as RUS rule would be: Users on exchserver1 (main site) check address book on dc2 (remote site), affecting main site.
On the other side users experience typical RUS problem (Outlook blocks when clicking on the To: input box) so this is confusing me.
Please any light shed on this issue would be appreciated.

  • Do you have sites and services setup in AD?
Are any Exchange servers located on a domain controller? Is the domain controller in the second site also a global catalog?

  • If the server name appears as a NetBIOS name, the data is being retrieved from an Exchange Server computer. If the server name appears as a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), the data is being retrieved from a global catalog server. You might have GC related problems. Can you please post exact error outlook clients receiving. Also are there any event logs ( red ones) on the problem Exchange server where these problem user mailboxes are located on? Please post some of them here as well.

  • Hi,

What do you means “Affect users are on site 2 with exchange server on the main site”?

As I understand, the affect users’ mailboxes is in the mailbox store of site 1. But it seem impossible else why you deploy exchange server 2 in site 2.

What’s the relationship of the main site and remote site. Are they parent domain and child domain? Where is the GC?

Could you please describe you topology more detailed?

Because Exchange download global address list from GC, why don’t you create a private OAB for users of site 2.
