Exchange 2013 DAG Shutdown

    Question

  • Need to shutdown 3 Node DAG for a move. All MXS are CAS and Mailbox Servers. (MXS01 - 03)

Are below steps the proper way to shutdown the DAG?

    Power Down

    1) Move all active DBs to MXS03

    2) Do I need to dismount DBs on MXS01 & 02 before shutdown, or I can just shut them down?

    3) Dismount all DBs on MXS03 then shutdown.

    Startup

    1) Turn on MXS03 and mount DBs

    2) Turn on MXS01 & 02

    3) Redistribute DBs

  • Dismounting a database dismounts the primary copy, so, yes, you can dismount them all on the server on which they're mounted.  There's nothing to do with copies.

  • If you dismount the DBs--which isn't strictly required but probably a good idea--then you may need to mount them after startup.

I assume the post-move IP addresses are the same.  If not, things are a lot more complicated.

So no need to dismount DBs on MXS01 & 02, I can just shutdown.

Good idea to dismount DBs on MXS03 before shutdown.

Startup MXS03 and re-mount DBs, then startup the rest of MXS and redistribute DBs.
