Virtual Internet Explorer - default? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I sequenced a few IE plugins, and created a shortcut to c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe. Everything works fine if I start IE from the shortcut published by App-V, but how can I make this the only or default browser? Users can still start the local iexplore.exe (the non App-V version), and clicking on a hyperlink (ie from Outlook) also starts the local iexplore.exe.

  • Hello,

This requires identifying all possible ways internet explorer is called. Citrix has provided this type of feature (redirecting IE-calls to some-place else) within their product and looking at their solution might be a way to understand how it works.

  • Thanks. I tried some settings and changing the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http(s)\shell\open\command" does seem to work. Need more testing, but before I continue, it also has some side effects. For instance, clicking an URL in Outlook gives this error:

    General failure: The URL was:
"http://www.somewebsite.com/somepage.html". An error occured in sending the command to the application.

And then Internet Explorer loads fine, except it is complaining about not being the default browser (but that is someting I think I can easily disable).

Is there a way to prevent the "General failure" message?

Also, it is possible to "publish" those keys only to users that have this package actually assigned to them?
