SCCM 2012 Client installation. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

If I use software distribution method using SCCM 2007 hierarchy to create SCCM 2012 client package and deployed to SCCM 2007 clients. will the clients will download content from the SCCM 2007 DP or SCCM 2012 MP server? because as soon as trigger the SCCM 2012 Client, it will not hold the cache content because it will uninstall SCCM 2007 client.

    TIA.

For SCCM Client installation ,the content downloaded to C:\windows\ccmsetup ,client will use ccmsetup.exe (bootstrap) that initiate connection to MP to find available distribution points, download the content to C:\windows\ccmsetup folder and install it from there.

Have a look at ccmsetup.log during the installation to see how it works.

Content download based on the boundaries how you have specified ,but for site assignment ,Make sure boundaries in CM07 do not place it in CM12 (No Overlapping) . In this case,Clients are assigned to CM07 ,they choose the Distribution points from CM07 site only.

  • This will not work.

Out of curiosity why are you trying to do this?

  • This is kind of creative attempt that many SCCM engineer had though of.. But this will create a lot of issue..

    1. If the installation command line forces to unintsall older version and install newer version, as soon as the installation starts the workstation will not be a client to cm 2007 anymore.. This results in missing / incorrect deployment status. You will have no option to see the deployment failures and success in cm2007

    2. Additionally, If cm2012 client installation fails for some reason (Like dependancies etc) the client would have already been removed from CM2007 and would not have 2012 client either.. Thus leaving it unmanaged

You could expect more.. So, You could actually initiate client push from ConfigMgr 2012 if you dont want the deployment history and other data which comes along with client when you do migration.. Or you could do this through SCCM 2007 to ConfigMgr 2012 migration approach

  • Dear Sir,

As others said, it's possible that it will cause some unexpected problem. Have you ever considered to upgrade your CM version to 2012 R2 or current branch?

Since it's not listed as unsupported yet, it's worth a try if you have to. Try with small group of test clients first before implementing to large collections of workstations.

Please check below thread and the poster was managed to deploy cm 2012 agent using cm 2007 hierarchy.

There will be some information that helps:

    Good luck.
