How to migrate DPM server to new hardware and new storage? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've read the documentation on migrating DPM to a new server. But I think this assumes I will be attaching the original disk storage to the new server. In my case I will be using a new server AND new storage disks. The original storage isn't compatible with the new server so I can't even connect it temporarily. What is the best way to migrate DPM in this case?

Would I need to create the new DPM server with a new name and run them both side by side until recovery points expire on the original server? If so, would the process be something like:

    1. Install new DPM server with different name

    2. Configure identical protection groups and settings

    3. Attach protected computer agents to new DPM server

    4. Perform initial sync, creating the replicas on the new storage disks

    5. Import tapes

    6. Remove original DPM server after all disk recovery points have expired

    Is there an easier way?

  • To my knowledge, unfortunately you can't move the storage, so the process above is your best bet.

For your new server, i would suggest to virtualise your DPM server, so that, in the event that you have to change hardware again (including storage), you can pick up your DPM virtual server along with the associated VHDX's and move it to a newer/different servers.
