MDT 2013 Crisis - cannot connect to deployment share RRS feed

  • Hi, Folks,

    Here are my circumstances:

    Server OS: Windows 2012 R2 Standard
    MDT Version: 2013
    Client OS to build/capture/deploy: Windows 8.1 Enterprise
    Reference Machine: VMWare virtual machine
    Target Machine: Microsoft Surface Pro 3

    This is basically a new server build and a new MDT setup. I have recreated the deployment share entirely to try to fix this problem.

    Every single time I boot the VM from the litetouch.iso, after the bootstrap loads and gathers some settings, I get "A connection to the deployment share (\\computername\deploymentshare$) could not be made. Connection OK. Possible Cause: invalid credentials."

    If I press F8, I can:

    a) Get a valid IP address via ipconfig
    b) Ping the deployment server
    c) Net use to the deployment share using the exact credentials supplied in bootstrap.ini

    To try to resolve this I have:

    a) Entered the FQDN of the deployment share in bootstrap.ini
    b) Duplicated the UserID, UserDomain, and UserPassword in both customsettings.ini and bootstrap.ini
    c) Entered the correct TimeZone and TimeZoneName in customsettings.ini
    d) Added the VMWare NIC drivers to the litetouch boot images
    e) Checked and double checked the credentials, security permissions, and share permissions on the deployment share

    And, yes, after each and every modification, I

    a) Update the deployment share
    b) Copy the new .iso to the virtual machine
    c) Add the updated boot images to WDS

    Some posts talk about

    a) cleaning the disk with diskpart (but it is a brand new VM, never used or even booted),
    b) synchronizing date and time settings (which I have tried without success, I can confirm that the time is not synchronized but the date is, so I try to set the time as close as possible to the server time but how close does it have to be? Hasn't helped anyway)

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    How can I make the problem more visible or are there any logs I can consult for details?

  • Just an update ...

    I figured out how to get to the MDT lite touch logs and everything seemed fine except when the failure to connect to the deployment share occurred, it was logging "Access denied".

    So I have changed the password and I'm in the process of updating everything to start all over again ...

  • Ensure that the account actually has permissions to the files on your deployment share, try opening up customsettings.ini using notepad on the WinPE client. :^)
    If you are still having problems please copy your bdd.log file up to a public site like OneDrive, and share the link.
