Windows 10 will not install RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm trying to create a reference image of Windows 10 Enterprise with MDT 2013 Update 1. I followed the directions here:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/mt297533.aspx

When I run the deployment task into my copy of VMware Workstation, Windows fails to install. The image copies over in no time, and goes into first-run settings. After that it reboots a couple of times and tells me it cannot complete the installation. I have logging enabled for the deployment share on the server, but there are no logs. The instructions build a deployment share specifically for creating reference images, so there are no drivers involved. Could that be the problem? Setup doesn't have the drivers for VMware Workstation? I've installed Windows 10 manually into Workstation and it went fine.

How can I try to troubleshoot this problem if I don't have any logs? Googling the error comes up with nothing close to my problem. Is there a way to pull the logs from the failed deployment? Pressing Shift + F10 gives me a command prompt, but I cannot connect to anything to copy/paste the log files from C:\Windows\Panther.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

    Jason

  • Can you post the BDD.log to OneDrive?

Most important details are logs. If you are unsure how to post logs or where to find them then reference https://keithga.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/video-mdt-2013-log-files-basics-bdd-log-and-smsts-log/

  • I cannot find it. It is not in C:\Windows\Panther on the VM. If it is there it is hidden.

  • The link in my signature has a video from Keith.  That will help you find it.

  • The video was not able to help me find the log files. The video's example is taken from within Windows PE. My failure occurs after the PE part of the deployment has finished, and Windows is starting, but before it makes it to the desktop. I have the SLSHARE property set, but that only populates log files after the deployment has finished successfully. I'm not even getting to the desktop. How did you get CMTrace into WinPE anyway? That's pretty cool.

You populate the extra files.  I Have a share that I put in that contains a folder structure that is is \Windows\System32\CMTrace.exe (this works for x86).

In the video it also discusses the other possible locations (even post install).

  • Running dir /s /b bdd.log on C:\ doesn't come up with anything. File not found.

  • SLShareDynamic can help.  That will log as things are happening.

  • I have SLShareDynamic set, but noting is being written there. Neither BDD.log or SMSTS.log can be found on the stricken VM.

  • Phew! The logging finally got sent over to the server. I have the BDD.log file on OneDrive. It really doesn't show too much, other than an error copying a script over. See URL.

  • So in your diskpart step try removing the 'Recovery' partition and setting OSDisk to 100%.

Also you could try commenting out DoNotCreateExtraPartition=YES.

  • The suggestions didn't work. My machine is UEFI partitioned and it will not boot after installing the image to the HDD.

  • Get the refresh of MDT 2013 U1 (released yesterday) and recreate your task sequences.

  • Thanks. Do I just install over the old version, or do I perform an uninstall/reinstall?

    Thanks again
