Create New Secure Store Target Application for Project Server Reporting Services (error) RRS feed

  • Question

  • When creating a new Target Application ID for Project Server Reporting Services I am getting the following error after filling the first screen and clicking next.

Your session has expired. Restart this wizard to continue.
Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation.
    Correlation ID: a6f8e8c3-f9e4-44fd-a56d-9730e8a1065b

Can someone help me out, I've followed the setup instructions and I'm on hour 6 of troubleshooting this issue.  I'm hoping this is a simple setting somewhere.

Here's the manual I used to setup: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662106.aspx

  • The only resolution I found was to start from scratch which was to reload both the SQL server / SharePoint-Project Server.  Both of these environments had no production data on them, so the impact was minimal.

  • Action 1: Generate New Key and check the status.

Action 2: Can you run the SPS wizard once and check the status?

Action 3: Can you restart the secure store service?

If it is brand new setup, last option would be delete the service application and create new one.

Go to Application management --> Manage Service Application --> Select the existing one --> Delete it.

In the left Top, click New, select Secure Store service --Create new secure store service with appropriate user account.

Generate the new Key, Later try to create Target Application ID.

  • Sriram,  Thanks for the response.  I tried everything and still get the same results.

When you refer to check the status, please give me a little more detail, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place.

  • I am sorry for the confusion.

Our motto is creating a new Target Application ID, so check the status means try to create new Target application.

Did you try to follow all the Actions?

  • Yes,  I tried creating the Target Application ID at every step.  Also, I got a session time out when recreating the Secure Store Service but it did start up the service.

  • Is SQL service on the same box? Is it on remote box with multiple instances?

Is your SPS is on VM box? If yes, can you allocate more memory and CPU?

Did you check the SQL & ULS logs?

    ==========================================================================

I am sorry to suggest you this last option. If possible try it just for troubleshooting purpose.

-Run the wizard, disconnect the current farm and create new farm

-While creating new farm, start only the necessary services using the configuration wizard

-Later generate the new key and configure secure store as required

  • Is SQL service on the same box? Is it on remote box with multiple instances?

Did you check the SQL & ULS logs? (the above one Diagnostics)

SQL server time and SPS server Time are same?

  • SQL and SPS are on different boxes.

  • Please answer for other questions to narrow down the issue.

Check the ULS logs to get the detailed error message.

Did you check the server time and regional setting and server time?

How is the SQL server performance?

  • Sriram,  This is my first time working with SharePoint / ProjecServer so I don't know what to monitor in the ULS or where to find the detailed message.  Also, is there a command for checking the time on the servers to make sure everything is in sync.

SQL performance seems fine and had plenty of memory, disk and cpu.

Also, getting the following level 1 error in the health report.

  • Sriram,

Should I start from scratch.  What we did was start with two new VMs, one for SQL SVR and one for the SHRPT / PRJSVR environments.  They are installed on 2008 r2.

We followed the installation instructions and at one of the very last steps of setting up reporting we ran into this issue.  I can open up project server through the web and start setting up projects, but I don't want to do that work if I have to reinstall.

I've reviewed the implementation materials multiple times and I can't find anything we missed.

Please let me know where to go from here.

  • Hello,

If you think the server is not stable and experienced performance issue, i would recommend to rebuild on new config db with only the required services.

    1. Start only necessary services using the configuration wizard.

    2. Configure secure store and Excel as per the above said article

    3. Later try to access the reports

  • Hello guys,

I have same issue here and after some digging I have run on this post:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010setup/thread/0db502ae-e2d3-4b66-91cc-ea00d1762e5c/

which actually has a solution for this.

So reason why it gives you error is that you have "_" somewhere inside your server name. Only solution is add alternate mappings for central administration without "_"

I have resolved it by extending central application and then setting this extended site as default one.

    Hope this will help !

    Worked for me ;)
