Duration not adding up to Start and End times??? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Up to this point, all the duration, start and end times have added up just fine for my tasks.  Suddently, for one particular task it isn't making sense:

    Duration: 30 days,  Start: 7/25/14,   End: 10/10/14

I have a start date of Sept. 15th and end date of Oct. 10th.  Every time I try to enter those dates together, one of them changes or the duration changes, none of it making sense.

There are no dependencies and no holidays during this timeframe.

    Any ideas?

  • Ideally dates should be an output not an input to Microsoft Project, dates being calculated by virtue of dependencies - entering dates results in constraints being applied.

If you edit a start date then then the finish date will change by virtue of the duration for the task. Similarly if you edit a finish date for a task the start date will change by virtue of the duration for the task.

I just did a crude calculation in Excel and the span of time in total days between the dates you quote first (Start: 7/25/14,   End: 10/10/14) would be 77 days and 25 days total from 15th September to 10th October - what are you trying to achieve or expecting the tool to do?

  • Actually, I did have some holidays entered into the project, which should not have effected the dates mentioned above.  For some reason, they did effect the above dates b/c when I removed the holidays, the schedule went back to normal and added up just fine.
