Internet Explorer 11 is already installed but the tick under Windows Features isn't set RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

my problem started with installing updates on a Windows 7 Professional x64 System. After installing most of the updates there had been installed Internet Explorer 11. But then Windows Update wanted to install the package again.

When installing IE11 over Windows Update again it put out the error Code 9c48.

I wanted to fix this by manually uninstalling the Update but unter the Windows Features window the tick beside IE11 wasn't set.

The funny thing is that I can start IE11 and if I check the version under the info of the IE11 it displays a correct Version (11.0.9600.16428 and KB2841134). Under Installed Updates the KB2841134 isn't shown.

Also I tried to manually remove packages with the following command:

    FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"

But after that I didn't have installed IE at all and couldn't install Version 11 or below. With the System recovery I switched on the state before uninstalling.

In the update history I can see after scrolling a little that IE11 was successfully installed.

  • Hi MeipoXu,

thanks again for your reply. I have already run sfc /scannow and it couldn't find damaged or missing files.

But while searching on the Internet I found a Microsoft FixIt that cleans IE installations. I remove the packages like in my question an ran the FixIt. After that I was able to install IE11 with the setup from update catalog.

So for all that have similar failures here is the link to download the FixIt for IE11:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/ie_performance_and_safety?wa=wsignin1.0

Now the OS realizes that the package is installed and all following updates could be installed.

  • Hi Mr Hammersmith,

Is it available to use the Internet Explorer 11 now?

If it is still not available to use the Internet Explorer 11, please take the following steps to have a check.
    1. Open an administrator command line and run "sfc /scanow" to check the health of system files.
2.I noticed you have tried the command line to uninstall Internet Explorer 11. We must restart the machine to make it take effect. Please run the command line again and restart the machine again to have a check.
3.We could download the Internet Explorer 11 installation package here.
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7
    https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=internet%20Explorer%2011%20windows%207

Please turn off the antivirus software temporarily during the installing process.

If you got any error messages during the installing process, please post back.

    Best regards

  • Hi MeipoXu,

thanks for your reply. I have alredy done all the Points you listed:

    1. I did this after uninstalling IE11 an it didn't tell me about corrupt or missing system files (but both x64 and x86 directories of IE11 were almost empty)

    2. After uninstalling IE11 packages I did restart the system. After that I couldn't execute programs that need IE to run (example: mmc)

    3. I also tried installig it manually but the setup crashed after a time and told me that IE11 couldn't be installed. Using the installer for IE9 and IE10 got me the same result.

I will try the package from this link because before I didn't get it from there. I will post the IE-Setup log if it fails again.

Actually the IE11 is installed but not shown under the installed updates page in the control settings.

I can use it but don't get updates for it execpt the IE11 Installer itself.

In the moment I don't have installed any antivirus software because thats a brandnew system.

It seems to me that my windows update client doesn't know that I have installed IE11.

  • Hi Mr Hammersmith,

Have you tried to run "sfc /scannow"?

"Checking version for C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ieframe.dll.  The file does not exist"
It seems that the present system files have been corrupted.
If you have not tried to run "sfc /scannow", please run it. In the same time, please navigate to C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ieframe.dll to check whether the ieframe.dll exists.
If you have tried to run "sfc /scannow", we may need to perform an in-place upgrade repair to fix present system files then install IE11 again to have a check. Please choose the right language package this time.

We could get a Windows 7 installation media from the link below. To perform an in-place upgrade repair: boot from the Windows 7 installation media and choose "Upgrade" install.
Download Windows 7 Disc Images (ISO Files)
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

    Best regards

  • Hi MeipoXu,

thanks again for your reply.
