Mailto URL for Promoted Links RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am using promoted links to create a "contact us" section, where each person's picture is used as the tile backgrounds. I would like it to be that when you click on a tile, Outlook opens up with that person's email address already filled in.

When creating the promoted links, I set the link location to be mailto: <email address>. However, when I click on the tile, I receive an error saying that "the website declined to show this webpage" because this website "requires you to log in". The interesting thing is that if I just hyperlink a picture with the mailto URL, it works fine. I just can't do it with promoted links. Is there another way to have Outlook open up when you click on a tile in promoted links? Thanks!

This SharePoint is for my company, and I do not have access to use CEWP.

  • Hi Coco,

Have you used SharePoint online or SharePoint on premise?

Per my test, Mailto promoted links work fine in both “Tiles” view and "All Promoted Links" view in SharePoint on premise,

But Mailto promoted links only work in "All Promoted Links" view but not work in “Tiles” view on SharePoint online if the Launch Behavior is selected as “In page navigation”.

If you are using SharePoint online, just make sure that the Launch Behavior is selected as “Dialog”:

Besides, as a workaround, you can custom a promoted links like the following:

First, I create a new page > insert a table into the page > insert some pictures into the table and format the pictures.

Then make the picture selected > in Format Text tab > Markup tab > click Edit Source.

Then add a link to the picture, here is the screen shot:

After saving the page and click the picture, it will have similar result with promoted links.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Coco,

According to your description, you add Mailto into promoted links, but when you click the tile, an error occurs.

I have tested in my environment and it works fine.

Please check ULS log to determine the exact cause of the error. ULS log is at:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS

Then try to create a new site collection and Promoted links list to see if the issue still exists.

Besides CEWP, you can use SharePoint Designer to add Email links: select the location you want to put then add the following code:

    <a href="mailto:abc@xyz.com">Contact Us</a>

    Best regards,

  • Hi Aaren,

Thank you very much for your response. I tried creating another promoted links list, and it still did not work. An interesting thing to note is that when I am in the "All Promoted Links" view, the link works just fine. However, when I switch to the tiles view, I receive that error.

Unfortunately, I do not have the ULS log. Under C:\Program Files\Common Files, there is no Microsoft Shared option. Perhaps this has to do with corporate limitations.

I think using SharePoint Designer might work, but I apologize, I am not experienced with Designer 2013. How do I edit the list when in SharePoint Designer? When at my promoted links site, I click on List -> Edit List. However, I am not sure what to do once SharePoint Designer 2013 is open.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Aaren,

I am having a similiar issue in O365. I created the promoted link and I followed the instructions to have to it open the mailto in a dialog. The dialog is coming up blank. Have you encountered this before?

    My link:

After saving, if i click on the tile, it is opening a blank dialog box.

Do you know any way to fix this?

This is happening in box Edge and Chrome browsers.

  • This no longer works. Selecting "In Dialog" opens a blank dialog along with the email. This has to be closed manually by the user. Selecting "in another tab" opens a blank tab with the email that also has to be manually closed. My

My workaround: I put the email address in the description and the browser rendered it as a mailto: automatically. I set the url of the promoted link to the page url + #. So if the promoted links was on home.aspx I put the url as home.aspx#

This is a hack because the styles on the promoted link make it look like you can click anywhere on the tile like the others but you can't. You have to click the email address in the description when the tile pops up.
