Dashboard Designer run error (Unauthorized 401) RRS feed

  • Question

  •

    Hello,

I have a problem with my Dashboard Designer.

PerformancePoint 2007 Monitoring Server is installed on one machine.

When I run Dashboard Designer on this machine it runs correctly (by using Central Site and button [RUN] Dashboard Designer downloads and runs well).

But when I try to run Dashboard Designer on a user's machine (by using Central Site also) when I click link to this application in a browser (Run button on Central Site), a browser raises a small message window  with the Unauthorized (401) error from the server.

After click Details.. button I receive the following log:

I don't know where is the problem, but I suppose it is related to my server's IIS configuration (maybe security settings).

Can anybody help me with my problem?

    Thanks in advance.

  • You probably have already looked at this, but wanted to throw this out just in case:

    1. Start the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager tool. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

    2. Expand the Web server, expand Web Sites, and then expand Default Web Site.

    3. Right-click PPSMonitoring, and then click Properties.

    4. Click the Directory security tab, and then click Edit under Authentication and access control.

    5. Click to select the Integrated Windows authentication check box if it is not already selected.

    6. Click OK two times to close the PPSMonitoring Properties dialog box.

  • What url are you trying to hit?  Was it 'http://bits:40000/DesignerInstall/' or 'http://bits:40000/DesignerInstall/PSCBuilder.application'?

    Thanks for all your advices.

I've found the solution which I've described on my blog:

  • Hi all,

    I have a similar problem:

My configuration consists of 2 servers (one database where PPS Monitoring is installed and one with SharePoint server). The Monitoring web site is configured for HTTPS. We had installed SP1 several months ago and the environment was fully operational.
My Monitoring installation worked fine until we installed PerformancePoint SP2. The SP installed with no errors.
Now when I open the PPS Central web site or the PPS web service, they open with no errors, but when I click on Download Dashboard Designer, the following error appears:

"Unable to connect to server" error message appears if I try to run Dashboard designer from the Start menu shortcut. The old version of Dashboard designer starts and it cannot connect to the PPS web service URL (which opens with no errors in IE).

    Any help will be appreciated!

  • I had skipped one (important) detail: the environment is configured to use Kerberos authentication.
Here is what the problem was: IIS web site authentication was improperly set after SP2. I am pretty sure this was properly configured before SP2 because downloading Dashboard designer worked (as opposed to after SP2). It does not sound very logical - SP2 changing the authentication in IIS... Anyhow, if you run to similar problems, check the following:

    1. Go to C:\Inetpub\Adminscripts
    2. Run the following:

cscript adsutil.vbs get w3svc/<put here the web site id taken from IIS console>/root/NTAuthenticationProviders"

    1. The output should be "Negotiate,NTLM"
    2. If something else is returned, you can change it using:

cscript adsutil.vbs set w3svc/<put here the web site id taken from IIS console>/root/NTAuthenticationProviders "Negotiate,NTLM"
You can use the following for any IIS web site.
Hope this is helpful for someone.
