Monthly Quality Rollup Fail RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have got Server 2008 R2 servers and one Rollup update fail every month. It failed in June and failed again in July.

2018-07 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4338818)

    Download size: 228.2 MB

Does anyone know why does it fail on our server?

    Thanks,

Answers

  • Probably CA Arcserve Backup on the server is causing the problem, please check this thread for a solution.

  • Hello moses004,

It would be helpful if you could provide the error code or windowsupdate.log, and cbs.log.

    Look forward to your feedback.

    Best Regards,

    Ray Jia

  • Hello moses004,

    Thanks for your feedback.

Error code 0x80070020 means that the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

    Try following method

    • Temporarily turn off the AV software, and install the update.
    • Restart the computer, and install the update.
    • Start the computer in safe mode with network support, and then install the update.

Hope above information could help you and look forward to your feedback.

    Best Regards,

    Ray Jia

  • Hi Ray,

I tried your suggestion and it failed miserably

    C:\Windows\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 6.1.7600.16385

    Image Version: 6.1.7601.18489

    Error: 87

The restorehealth option is not recognized in this context.
For more information, refer to the help.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

    I have tried DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Checkhealth and failed but completed DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

  • Hello moses004,

    Thanks for the feedback.

Note this line in your log:

AU WARNING: Post-reboot install failure, error = 0x80070020

However, as i mentioned above, error code 0x80070020 means that the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. Please check if there is some software which may be cause this issue such as backup software or file protect software besides AV software.

So I recommend that you manually download this update and install it in Safe Mode for a test.

What's more, refer to following link and check if it work.

    Look forward to your feedback.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi,

Installer service cannot start in safe mode message come up everytime I try to update the server.

    Wednesday, July 25, 2018 8:28 AM
  • Hi,

I found this on a similar thread:

    Safe Mode with Network

    REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"

    and followed by

    net start msiserver

This will start the Windows Installer Service.

Then try to install the missing update.

Did not work for me, I get an error trying to install the update manually in safe mode

    Regards, Ulf

  • Probably CA Arcserve Backup on the server is causing the problem, please check this thread for a solution.
