Why does overallocation hours increase when overtime work is added? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a number of activites that are on the critical path with fixed duration. Three of them have a resource that is overallocated so the resource will have to work overtime to complete the task within the activity duration.

to calculate the overtime cost i add overtime work to the activity but then the overallocation hours also increase eventhoug the work remains unchanged. Why is this?

The way i understand it and according to my searches the overtime work is included in the (total) work.

What should my settings be in order to get my Overtime Cost

In Microsoft Project, the definition of an overallocation is when the Peak value exceeds the Max. Units value for a resource during any time period.  To properly determine why you are still seeing overallocated resources after adding planned Overtime Work, try the following:

    1. Apply the Task Usage view.
    2. Temporarily insert the Max. Units and Peak fields in the table on the left.
    3. Compare the Peak value with the Max. Units value for each resource.

Please let us know what you find and we will try to help you.
