Socket error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Windows XP SP3 PC that was infected with spyware and now it can't get a DHCP address or get on the internet if I assign a static IP address.  If I try to telnet to port 53 (DNS) I receive an error "A socket operation encountered a dead network".  I have tried to rebuild the tcp/ip stack by using the "Netsh winsock reset" but that doesn't solve the issue.

We have run all of the anti-spyware software I can think of but still the connection isn't working properly.  Any suggestions??  Thanks for your help.

  • We did try the system restore option and it fails to complete.  Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Update, we were able to solve this problem by running the System File Checker.

    sfc /scannow
