Is FAST a different search engine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

is the FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint (i) an entirely different search engine to the search engine included in SharePoint Server 2010 or (ii) additional functionality bolted on to the search engine included in SharePoint Server 2010?

If one was to use FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint would one make any use of the search engine included in SharePoint Server 2010?

    Thanks, Shane

  • It's a completely different search engine. Microsoft bought FAST, and has created FAST for SharePoint based on it's ESP product (also known as FSIS and FSIA today).

The only part of the included search engine in use in SharePoint once FAST is installed, is for people search. FAST has more query and linguistic features compared to the oob search, and more powerful options regarding processing the content being indexed. It also scales better when you approach 40+ million documents.

  • Just to add my two cents - FAST has no "People Search" connector, so you must use SharePoint people search connector to get it to work. It's not a big deal - having FAST installed doesn't stop the normal SharePoint search components from being installed/usable, you just have to configure people search separately from the rest of your content search when using FAST.

Bit annoying, but oh well, i'm sure v.next will include that functionality :)
