Patching Upgrading SharePoint with SP2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey Guys,

We're going to put SP 2 on our servers.  Question 1: Do we need the foundation sp or just the server?  Question 2:  What exactly is in SP2 or another way of putting it - how far back does it cover?  We have some identified security vulnerabilities that apparently have been covered by updates going back to 2011 dealing with cross-scripting and elevation of privileges problems. SP2 is supposed to have security enhancements/fixes, but nobody says what they are.  I need to know if we will need additional CU's, if we need to go back and get those updates which should have been automatic or if SP 2 is going to cover it all.  Pretty confusing stuff, for me anyway.

    Thanks guys

  • Hi James,

regarding your 1st question, you may see from this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/ff800847.aspx

it shows separately which product that you use, foundation line product or server line product, if for example you use the server product then please download the server cumulative update only.

Regarding the SP2 for sharepoint 2010, the details of component that will be upgraded you may check at this link:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2687524/en-us

as we understand that each environment is unique, there is no better method to try at your development stage first, so that you may know if should the scope of updates cover and not make any critical changes at your environment.

SP2 is an update that covers most of the updates from the previous updates and added by new updates that havent included at previous updates.

for some example please have a check on this article: http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2013/07/23/sharepoint-server-2010-service-pack-2-has-been-released.aspx
