Less information in the PkgXferMgr.log since SP2 upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear all,

I've been running with SCCM 2012 SP1 CU1 and then CU4 for 2 years, and I used to daily check different logs, especially the PkgXferMgr.log.

Since I upgraded my infrastructure to SCCM 2012 SP2 CU1, this log is now very poor.

I can only see stuff like that when I'm sending a package :

    Sending file '\\XXX02IT.EU.SEB.COM\SMS_DP$\C4ECF8E6A7C92A94835A45E27104BD96AFB0FB3763FCAC9641E83910910B0825-0DCB9842-2124-427E-B752-60F11BCE8E8C.P010051E.temp'
    Sending file '\\XXX02IT.EU.SEB.COM\SMS_DP$\7D42C96E8B201E863F4048E83005745C8ED249027388859A35768485CE10B42E-5F4ADDC2-E20C-455C-9069-240A7E66EE8D.P010051E.temp'
    Adding release.dat file in 5F4ADDC2-E20C-455C-9069-240A7E66EE8D.

However I no longer see such information as the volume (in kb) which has already been sent and the remaining volume which still needs to be sent for the package. Therefore I'm no longer able to approximately determine how much time it's gonna take before the package is done sending.

Is there anyone that also noticed this behavior ?

Do you know if it is possible to make this log more verbose again ?

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards,

    Cédric

  • You can also use DPjobMgr from ConfigMgr toolkit (which might also only be available for R2), but it is also able to tell you details about the progress.

  • Do you have an example of a previous log? I would check the log file settings in the ConfigMgr Service Manager tool.

Also, if this is truly a bug, you could submit it to Connect.

  • Hello !

    Thank you for your answer.

Unfortunately I do not have old logs, but I found this image on, the web where you can see what I am talking about :

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/638097

Do you see the red line about "Total size" on this pic ?

I no longer see such information since the SP2 upgrade.

I saw that it's possible to change the logginglevel here :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Tracing\SMS_PACKAGE_TRANSFER_MANAGER

However, even when I change the value from 1 to 0, I have more information but not the information about the size.

I also changed the value of the Debuglogging key from 0 to 1, and I'm starting to see information like :

Attempt to write 39280 bytes to \\XXX02IT.EU.SEB.COM\SMS_DP$\....

However, this time... I have way too much information.... even useless information that I did not have in the past like :

Checking for existence of mfx_mft_mjpgvd_32.dll in FE4DD990-A338-4FEC-9501-1D229D2C15BC.

I would like to get the same verbosity as before but I do not know how.

    Cédric

  • The console (Monitoring node) should tell you the percentage already being transferred, but I am not sure if this is only true for R2.

  • Sorry but where exactly in the Monitoring node ?

If you mean the Content Status, I do not have such detailed information.

    I'm using SCCM 2012 SP2 CU1.

  • Hi Cédric,

There is no such information(Attempt to write 39280 bytes to ...) in my PkgXferMgr.log(SCCM 2012 R2) by default. Maybe the method of PkgXferMgr.log logging has been changed. You should submit your suggestion to Microsoft.

  • Hello,

    This tool seems indeed interesting.

However, as I'm not in R2, I'm not sure I can use it.

  • Good news !

Actually I just tested it and R2 toolkit is working with SCCM 2012 SP2.

    It's a pretty useful tool.

However, unfortunately, it appears that the column (Progress %) is almost never filled in.

Do you have this behavior as well ?

    Best regards,

    Cédric

  • Nope, it's working fine. You will only see a percentage value if transfer is in progress though.

  • Hello,

Although It's not exactly the answer to my initial question, this tool is even more useful than the log.

That's why I will mark this question as answered.

Thank you very much for your help.

    Cédric
