Microsoft Hyper-V & Hardware Snapshots not Deleting RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have three hosts in a Cluster running Hyper-V, and use DPM 2010 to backup these hosts.  Our SAN is a HP StorageWorks MSA2324i with eight licensed snapshots.

We've installed the VSS Hardware Providers on each host and when DPM does the backup, the snapshots are created on the SAN.  However, once the backups are complete, the snapshots do not delete themselves.  As a result, we run out of licensed snapshots.  We can fix by manually deleting the snapshots.  Is there any file or log to take a look at to see why the snapshots are not deleting?

A theory may be that we're using a seperate Virtual Disk on the SAN to handle snapshots, so we have to manually create a snap-pool on this other disk and associate the snap-pool with the data disk.  So, DPM can't automatically create the snap-pool; it has to use one that's already there.

    Thanks!

  • Hi, we deleted the Virtual Disk that had the snap-pool, recreated everything from scratch and it appears to be now creating and deleting snapshots as expected.  Must have just been a glitch, thanks.
