Front end service (RTcSrv) is not starting RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I have 2 FE servers.

FE1 which was the first server in skype infrastructure while start deploying the services , it is not starting the front service. however 2nd server of FE is working fine. users are able to sign-in as well if is point them to 2nd FE.

on FE1 , I am getting some events errors. probably some thing mismatched with backend databases. please see below errors. I have updated both FE with all updates. but still the same.

Server could not register with the back-end since a version mismatch was detected.

Version mismatch database "rtc" using the connection string of

driver={SQL Server Native Client 11.0};Trusted_Connection=yes;AutoTranslate=no;server=(local)\rtclocal;database=rtc;. This could be transient if the database is in the process of being upgraded.

Cause: The database schema and the Server were updated by different installation packages.

    Resolution:

Ensure both the Server and back-end were installed or modified by the same installation package.

The component Live Communications User Services (application: Default) reported a critical error: code 0xC3EE78F8 (Enterprise Edition Server successfully registered with the back-end, but a stored procedure version mismatch was detected. The service will not start until this problem is resolved.

Cause: The database schema and the Enterprise Edition Server were updated by different installation packages.

    Resolution:

Ensure both the Enterprise Edition Server and back-end were installed or modified by the same installation package

    Also If run this command:

    PS C:\> Get-CsPoolUpgradeReadinessState

    PoolName             : degpool.domain.xx
    State                : Ready
    TotalFrontends       : 2
    TotalActiveFrontends : 1
    UpgradeDomains       : {
                           UpgradeDomainName: UpgradeDomain1
                           IsReadyForUpgrade: True
                           Total FrontEnds: 1
                           Total Active FrontEnds: 0
                           Frontends: SFB-FE01.domain.xx

                           UpgradeDomainName: UpgradeDomain2

it shows that FE1 is ReadyforUpgrade: True. (what does this means) ?

    Event ID: 30914

Initialize failure. Failed to initialize the Presence Server component.

    Error code: 0xC3E83201(SIPPROXY_E_SHUTDOWN_REQUESTED)

    Event ID: 12330

    Failed starting a worker process.

    Process: 'RtcAggregate.exe'  Exit Code: 0xC3E83201(SIPPROXY_E_SHUTDOWN_REQUESTED).

Cause: This could happen due to low resource conditions or insufficient privileges.

    Resolution:

Try restarting the server. If the problem persists contact Product Support Services.

  • Yes. It does update the local copy. What CU that you installed on the Front End servers? Is that CU5?

  • Why is the sfb-fe02 is on CU3? Front End servers in same Enterprise Edition pool cannot be in 2 different CU versions. Could be the reason that Quorum doesn't let Fe01 to start. You need to have them both in the same CU version.

  • I assume this is 2 Standard edition servers?

On FE 1 Skype for Business management shell, run the command Install-CsDatabase -ConfiguredDatabases -SqlServerFqdn <local server FQDN>

  • No, it is an Enterprise server environment, on both servers were installed with enterprise pool setup.

I have 2 director servers and 2 persistant chat servers as well.

in case of enterprise server, I believe the command will be changed ? rite, I tried to run this command as well but no luck.

    please suggest

  • For the enterprise, Same command with the back end SQL Server FQDN with Instance;

On FE 1 Skype for Business management shell, run the command Install-CsDatabase -ConfiguredDatabases -SqlServerFqdn <back end SQL FQDN> -SqlInstanceName <Instance Name>

The issue there is that the back end Database was not running the schema version that it should. The command above should fix it.

  • for SQL server FQDN , I can use IP address as well , rite ?

my bad, while I was deploying the toplogy first time, I connected the DB with IP and now I canot change it.

I assume while running this command, it will update local RTC copy of db on FE1 from the backend SQL server DB ? am I rite ?

  • that's what I am checking. I just click on the link above mentioned in the CU version and it mentioned clearly there:

    Removal information

Before you uninstall this cumulative update, you must first uninstall all cumulative updates of core components whose version number 6.0.9319.55 or later for Skype for Business Server 2015, core components. Otherwise, you won't be able to start the RTCSRV service.

To remove both cumulative updates, follow these steps.

Note We recommend that you see the instructions that are described in Updates for Skype for Business Server 2015 (KB3061064) when you remove both cumulative updates.

but now I am following the steps mentioned for work around and I am not able to find any installed patch Microsoft article is referring. (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3066080/cannot-start-rtcsrv-service-after-you-uninstall-skype-for-business-ser)

I think the best way is to update CU3 to CU5 ?

is it ok to upgrade to FE2 to CU5 ?

  • Yes. No need to uninstall the CU. Just update the CU3 one to CU5. And then You might need to run, in case the front end servers won't start.

    Reset-CsPoolRegistrarState -PoolFqdn "atl-cs-001.litwareinc.com" -ResetType QuorumLossRecovery
