DPM 2012R2 - Tape Backups failing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Since a week or so, all our tape backups started failing. The disk based backups are fine, only tape backups are failing.

The jobs start OK but a some point while running the job (random intervals) the job will fail with error ID60 - 0x809909B0 -  the protection agent was temporarily unable to respond because it was in an unexpected state.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the same time the following event is logged in the event viewer:

    System log:

Event ID 7034 - The DPMRA service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this x time(s).

    Application log:

Faulting application name: DPMRA.exe, version: 4.2.1292.0, time stamp: 0x54d355f4
Faulting module name: FileWriterHelperPlugin.DLL, version: 4.2.1292.0, time stamp: 0x54d355f1
    Exception code: 0xc0000005

    Faulting process id: 0x394
Faulting application start time: 0x01d06c55b6d057ca- The server running DPM is 2012 R2 and has all windows updates installed

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are also seeing VSS errors in the Application log that might be related:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A component was added to the backup document that does not exist in any writer's metadata. Ensure that only actual writer components are added to the backup document.

    DPM information:

    • The DPM Server is running Server 2012 R2 Standard. We have made sure all windows updates are installed
    • DPM Version is 4.2.1292.0, this is the latest update rollup
    • Tape Streamer is an Overland Neo200S library, holding 24 tapes. We have run a full diagnostic on the hardware, it is functioning OK
    • The tape drive itself is an IBM Totaltorage 3573 LTO5 HH unit
    • Server and Tapestreamer have been rebooted

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Searches on the internet have revealed no similar problems.
