Internet Explorer crashing on Windows Server 2003 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had posted this message in the Windows Server Forums General but was suggested to post in this forum instead. Here is my orginal post.

I have a Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Server that is being used with Terminal Services. As of last Friday, Internet Explorer 7 will not launch or launch's briefly and then close on its own. The event log reports a application error in explorer faulting module unknown. I have tried the following to no avail.

    - Scan for spyware using Spybot, Malwarebytes, SuperAntispyware, Norton Endpoint Security 12. Ran Rkill before running the scans. Anything that was found has been removed.
    - Restarted the server.
    - Upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 and downgraded to Internet Explorer 6.
    - Installed Firefox.
    - Ran SFC /scannow.

If you launch Internet Explorer from the regular icon, it will not usually start. If you right click and select no addons then it will start and work for about a minute and close. If you doubleclick on a website shortcut icon it will start and work for about a minute and then close. All other applications including appear to work OK. Email clients work OK. Other applications using the internet work OK.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Hi,

I suggest you try the following steps to test the issue.

    1. Reset your IE settings. Here is an official article can be referred to.

How to reset Internet Explorer settings

    2. Test the issue in Clean Boot mode to check whether the third party tool affect IE.

    3. Restart the machine in Safe Mode with Networking and check whether Internet Explorer works or not.

    Hope this helps.
