upgrade DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • dear ALL

i have  questions regarding the upgrade

I have installed the hot fix 2615782  (QF4) to my test DPM server 2010

    now I have source of  DPM 2012 SP1 ,

Q1 : I read on all the upgrades procedures that I have to upgrade from DPM 2010 with (QF4) to DPM 2012 RTM not DPM 2012 SP1 is this true,if this is the case what I should do as I only have the  DPM 2012 SP1

Q2: I read in hot fix (2615782) that it is recommended that SCOM 2012 must be dedicated to centrally manage system center DPM 2012 ( in our small environment we already have one single server for scom 2007,we are not going to upgrade it to scom 2012 ,is there a problem and how can the scom manage the DPM ,is scom monitors the servers only I don't understand this recommendation )

Q3 in case the upgrade fails and the DPm 2010 is not functioning well ,how can I recover the system ,how could I back up the DPM  it self ,note that my DPM 2010 machine is virtual machine on VMware where  can get snapshot of it  and revert back to this snapshot ,is this supported

Q4 my DPM 2010 server backup the databases of MBX1 and MBX2 ,MBX1 and MBX2 are members to dag1 I noticed that

updating the agent  require consistency check and the update will stop any backup jobs ,I have 6 databases on  each  serer  with 100 GB in size so if I make consistency for each database this will take a lot of time and this won't make me not able to backup every one hour in other meaning .

Q5 I think about removing the agent of DPM 2010 on my MBx02 and install a new DPM 2012 server and use it to backup MBx02 so i will have MBx01 backed up with DPM server2010 and MBX2 backed up with DPM 2012 is this applicable

  • Hi,

Q1 : I read on all the upgrades procedures that I have to upgrade from DPM 2010 with (QF4) to DPM 2012 RTM not DPM 2012 SP1 is this true,if this is the case what I should do as I only have the  DPM 2012 SP1

A1) Yes, you need to upgrade to DPM 2012 before you can upgrade to DPM 2012 Sp1.

A2)  Only SCOM 2012 is supported for central console.

A3)  See the following TechNet article:

    Repairing DPM 2010
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399388.aspx

Q4 my DPM 2010 server backup the databases of MBX1 and MBX2 ,MBX1 and MBX2 are members to dag1 I noticed that

updating the agent  require consistency check and the update will stop any backup jobs ,I have 6 databases on  each  serer  with 100 GB in size so if I make consistency for each database this will take a lot of time and this won't make me not able to backup every one hour in other meaning .

    A4)  Plan accordingly.

Q5 I think about removing the agent of DPM 2010 on my MBx02 and install a new DPM 2012 server and use it to backup MBx02 so i will have MBx01 backed up with DPM server2010 and MBX2 backed up with DPM 2012 is this applicable

A5)  Yes,  I believe that will work, each exchange DAG can be protected independently by different DPM Servers and I don't believe DPM versions will matter.
