Keyboard and Mouse not Working at Logon Screen RRS feed

  • Question

  • User had a BSOD in the middle of updating her Dell workstation.

Now, when logging on, keyboard and mouse do not work at password screen.

    Troubleshooting I've tried:

    -Restart (no luck)
-Start in safe mode (mouse and keyboard work)
-Recovery console (mouse and keyboard work)
    -Unplug/replug wireless dongles (no luck)
-Tried different USB port (no luck)

Any ideas to get mouse & keyboard working on regular startup?
Unfortunately she doesn't have a wired mouse or keyboard to test with.

  • Being that the BIOS is set up properly,with safe-mode working ok,if the pc is 4 yrs old or so,replace the MB battery,its a 2032 type.A faulty battery will corrupt BIOS/basic input/output/settings..If you replace,power off pc,remove old battery,wait 12-15 minutes,install new,power up pc.Power to the BIOS,reset date-time,reset for add on cards,etc,save & exit BIOS.Let the OS run normal.

  • Hi,

The issue may have occurred due to the incompatibility or incomplete updates installed on the computer.

Try to boot into safe mode and uninstall the incomplete update.

Run the following commands to delete update cache:

    net stop wuauserv
    Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    net start wuauserv

    Best regards,

    Yilia
