Can Windows Server 2012 R2 be Installed as a Guest on a Windows 8.1 Hyper-V Host? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can Windows Server 2012 R2 be installed as a guest on a Windows 8.1 Hyper-V host?
If so, what might I be missing or doing wrong?

I've been trying to set up a VM with Server 2012 R2 on my Win 8.1 laptop, to preview it. Our current servers don't have the hardware capacity to run 2012, so I can't preview it in a VM on those servers.

When going through the installation on the guest, I only get to the location settings and then the installation fails with the following error message:

Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible and restart the installation.

    Error code: 0xE0000100

    VM Settings:

    • Generation 1
    • Startup Memory: 512MB and Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine
    • VHD Size: 300GB
    • Install OS from SW_DVD9_Windows_Svr_Std_and_DataCtr_2012_R2_64Bit_English_-4_MLF_X19-82891.ISO

    Laptop Specs:

    • Operating System: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
    • CPU: Intel Core i5 3230M @ 2.60GHz Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
    • RAM: 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 783MHz (11-11-11-28)

  • I tried installing it as a guest via VirtualBox and that went properly. I guess I'll do my testing within that.

  • Sounds like an issue with your ISO.  You should be able to install without issue.

Download the ISO again directly from MS and give it another try. Also, make sure your ISO is on local storage to rule out other issues.
