Setting IE as default browser in group policy and preventing users changing the default RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've ready many pages and threads so far about this, some helpful and some not, but I still haven't got a working solution. I need to ensure that our corporate desktops have IE11 set as their default browser, whilst allowing Chrome as a secondary browser, mostly on Windows 7 machines but also on some Windows 8+ machines. I need to apply this across the organisation preferably using Group Policy. I can't find anything so far that works for me. Any pointers would be helpful.

  • Hi,

There is no specific GPO to set default Browser, but you can modify following registry to set default browser, after then apply the registry settings through Group Policy:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations\http
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations\https

  • Thanks. I'll have a play with these keys in Group Policy Preferences. I assume just setting the userchoice values is all that is needed?
