Step-by-Step migration of FIM sync installed on W2k8 R2 to another W2k12 server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear All,

I would be most grateful if I can be helped with how to migrate and upgrade or vice-versa a FIM 2010 and DB installed locally on a Windows 2008 R2 Server to Windows 2012 R2 server and in addition provide high availability for the service.

    Current Situation:

    - FIM 2010 Sync Service and DB installed on Windows 2008 R2 domain controller (The service is used for the synchronization of Global Address Lists between 2 Exchange organisations)

    - DC needs to be upgraded to Windows 2012

    Desired Situation:

Migrate FIM Sync to a new 2012 Server or more servers as needed

    DB on another Server

Provide High Availability for both Sync Service and DB

As I mentioned at the introduction, I cannot express my gratitude enough if I can be provided with a step-by-step guide. Absent of that, any help is still very much welcomed.

    Thank you.

  • Hi FemiAj,

here's the steps to change the backend SQL server.

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/5465.fimilm-how-to-move-the-backend-sql-server-synchronization-service-database.aspx

Once you're done moving the DB, you can follow the steps to restore FIM Sync service on Server B which are:

To restore the FIM Synchronization Service

    1. Restore the SQL Server database for the FIM 2010 database.

    2. Install the FIM 2010 Synchronization Service on a computer in the same Active Directory domain as your previous FIM Synchronization Service. When you install the service, be sure to select the Re-Use Existing Database option. During installation you will also be required to provide the encryption keys that you previously exported.

    3. Start the FIM Synchronization Service.
