PS2010: Problems with the Content DB moving databases between PS2010 environments. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone,

I'm trying to move databases between two environments with the same configuration in PS2010 (Same version, language and SP and Jun 2012 CU) between a testing environment to the Production Env.

I followed all the recommendationsofBrian blog's:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brismith/archive/2010/06/10/project-server-2010-restoring-or-migrating-pwa-instances.aspx

these are the steps I have done:

1.- Backup of all the databases: 4 for PS and the Content Database (Total 5 DB)

2.- Restored them in the SQL Server (Production environment) and granted sysadmin permissions

3.- In the SharePoint / Project Server SERVER I did:

    - I create a new Web App (in the port 80 by default)

    - I extended this site using a template (I tried TWICE) project server template

Then, before provisioning the PWA site...

1.- I Dismount the Content DB (created before) via PowerShell and STSADM (as I tried twice...I shared with you the command lines)

    get-spcontentdatabase -webapplication http://srmdeprjp01 | dismount-SPContentdatabase

Once dismantled, I mounted WSS_Content from the Testing Environment.

    Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name WSS_Content -DatabaseServer srmdeprjpbd\maps -WebApplication http://srmdeprjp01/PWA

    stsadm.exe -o addcontentDB -url http://srmdeprjp01/PWA -ds srmdeprjpbd\maps -dn WSS_Content

    After to do this:

    - I create a new provisoning for the PWA (With success!!)

I verified that all information is successfully migrated for Project information such as: Enterprise fields, groups, Stages, Phases,...BUT

but, do not work the following features:

    - To create a new Project Plan (EPT) in the Project Center...when I select New --> EPT Project list...all this list is grayed out or disabled and I cannot create a Project Plan.

    - PDP are not migrated in the new environment  (content db is not migrated correctly)

    - Project Sites cannot be opened (Bulk edit site does nothing)

Could you help me regarding this issue please?? I spent all my working day without a possible solution, and from my experience in other implementations have not had these problems.

Thanks in advance for your time and responses guys!

    Have a great day.

  • Paul,

First of all, thank you for your response.

These references that you sent me are very good!! but have you seen any difference of the step by step that I explained previusly and the references that you sent me?

Becuase I am aware of the reference (Brian)... I think I've followed all the steps well.

What do you think can I have done wrong or should I change in theses steps I have outlined in my previous post?

    Best regards!

  • Pedro,

I notice you are mounting the content db against the webapp including the /PWA.

    Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name WSS_Content -DatabaseServer srmdeprjpbd\maps -WebApplication http://srmdeprjp01/PWA

Try mounting it at the web app root site level only (remove the /PWA).

    Also I notice your doing a :

    stsadm.exe -o addcontentDB -url http://srmdeprjp01/PWA -ds srmdeprjpbd\maps -dn WSS_Content

after the mount? This is effectively doing the same thing again and you shouldn't need to repeat.

The PWA site will be in the content db and when you do the PWA provision, PS will wire it back up correctly.

  • Hi Alex,

As I told you before, I will try again in one hour (more or less)

    Anyway, responding to your email:

    ----------------

I notice you are mounting the content db against the webapp including the /PWA.

    Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name WSS_Content -DatabaseServer srmdeprjpbd\maps -WebApplicationhttp://srmdeprjp01/PWA

Try mounting it at the web app root site level only (remove the /PWA).

PEDROF: YES, I TRIED IT BEFORE...WITHOUT SUCCESS FOR THIS REASON, I WILL TRY ONE MORE TIME DURING TODAY (IN 1-2 HOURS)

    Also I notice your doing a :

    stsadm.exe -o addcontentDB -url http://srmdeprjp01/PWA -ds srmdeprjpbd\maps -dn WSS_Content

after the mount? This is effectively doing the same thing again and you shouldn't need to repeat.

PEDROF: YES, I AM AWARE OF THIS (I DID IT ONLY ONE (ONLY ONE COMMAND... BOTH SENTENCES ARE DOING THE SAME THING, BUT I TRIED TWICE (ALL PROCESS...USING THE FIRST TIME POWERSHELL COMMANDS, AND THE SECOND TIME STSADM COMMAND :-)    )

The PWA site will be in the content db and when you do the PWA provision, PS will wire it back up correctly.

I WILL TRY, AND I WILL LET YOU KNOW GUY.

THANK YOU ALEX FOR YOUR COLLABORATION, IT IS VERY APPRECIATED

    REGARDS,

    PEDROF.-
