Logon Background screen is not applying any more from GPO

    Question

  • Hi Guys,

I am just facing an issue, that the new logon screens are not applied for the company PCs. It was working fine previously, I only changed the pictures on the share and the WMI query in GPO.

I think the problem is not with the query, because I can see that the pictures are copied to:

    C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds

But when I try to open a picture from:

    C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds

I receive an error from irfanview: Can't read Header!

Unknown file format, empty/damaged file or file not found!

But actually if I copy these pictures to somewhere elso on my computer, I can open them.

The wmi querry, I am using is:

    SELECT * FROM Win32_LocalTime WHERE Year = 2015 AND Month = 2 AND Day >= 13 AND Day <= 14

Please help, if you have experienced something like this.

    Thank you,

    BR,

    Zoltán

  • Hi,

I just found the root cause. The problem was, that I didn't check the file size, when I received it from marketing and this time they sent me very big files, and since it cannot be bigger then 256 KB the Pictures were not applied.

    Thanks,

    BR,

If Irfan cannot read the file, windows cannot read it, too :) Do a
"comp" with the source file - are they identical? If not, check your
copy procedure and your AV solution.

  • Hi Martin

I checked the files now again. They can be opened with Windows Photo Viewer, or edited by Paint. But anyways, it looks very strange. The files are copied, I have the right pictures in the C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds folder, but for some reason windows cannot use them. For Antivirus we are using SCEP, but I don't think it should be sg. with this, because it was working before, and only the files were changed since yesterday.

I compared the filesize and everything looks ok.

Windows cannot use them for some reason. And I also tried to copy other files manually to this C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds folder, but simply nothing happens.

In the GPO I have the following set:

Maybe because today is Friday the 13th. :)

    Thank you,

Ok so far, but IrfanView easily opens them. What about the "cannot read
    header" issue?
