Booting from external HD via USB RRS feed

  • Question

  • My XP PC motherboard died.  I installed the hard drive in an external enclosure and connected it to a Win 7 PC.  I can read the drive just fine.

I tried to use the boot menu via F12 after a cold boot and selected the external USB connected HD, but got a blue screen error:

         STOP: 0x00000078 (0xBA4C3524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000.

I'd like to boot from this XP drive because there is a lot of software installed on it .  The Win 7 PC has no room to install the drive internally.

  • Couple reasons:

    • XP does not support booting from an external device such as a USB hard drive.
    • The hardware on your Windows 7 computer probably differs enough that the XP HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is the wrong one for the Windows 7 hardware

Even if you were to install the XP drive internally, you will still get the same or similar STOP error.
