Exporting to PDF or printing is unreadable RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I export my MS Project 2010 project, the .pdf is unreadable.  Actually, I get the same thing if I just try to print the file.  All I see are ...'s when text should be.

  • BABRC,

Does it look like the lines just show the top of the letters? I've had this now and again when haveing used project for about 4 to 5 hours straight. Usually I save the project, close MS Project 2010 and then reopen the program and planning (Notice I say program, I need to close it all the way, not just the file).

This fixes printing for me most of the time. Normally, when I have this issue the detailed information window looks like it's stretched over 3 monitors and it doe'sn't show anything.

Google said the following: (not usefull if you use Project 2010, then again, it just might)

    Hi mark,

Are you using Project 2007? There have been reports that turning
off the 3D Gantt Bar display helps. See Tools> Options, view tab.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

As Julie (hey, I just noticed, is this the same Julie that wrote the google awnser?) said, it might be the printer drivers. Have you had any trouble with other programs and printing? Can you try a different printer?

  • Hello all,

Restarting the "application" seems to have solved the issue.

  • Hello Bruce,

What does the file show in Print Preview? What is your scaling set to?

  • The print preview shows the same thing.

    The scaling is 100%.

I have gotten around this by opening the project file on another computer and saving it without changing anything.

When I reopen it on the original computer, the Print Preview and the PDF are now working.

Something got changed by loading it and saving it.

Still have no idea what got changed.

  • What is the difference between the two computers?

    I'd check:

    SP and CU Level

    Printer driver

Both are running Project 2010 -- yes?

  • Dag Koen,

Yes it is the same Julie. She probably did not write a "Google answer" but an answer on the Newsgroup that was picked up by Google. And to all: turning off the 3D Gantt bars helps printing, also in 2010. Several print drivers really don't like this :-(

  • Thanks Bruce.  Just for future reference which "application" did you need to restart?
