  • Are you able to browse the Internet from your WFE servers? If "No", then  you need to have proxy enabled to have Internet. The RSS feeds are downloaded locally to the server and shown inside the RSS webpart.

  • Hi Ashish,

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes we are able to browse the Internet from our WFE server. Sometimes the RSS feed is working and sometimes its throwing the protocol error.

  • Does it depend on the feed you're viewing?  i.e. is it working for 1 particular feed but not on another?  Also, do you have more than 1 WFE and have youo changed the web.config all all applications and all WFE's?

    • Are these feeds which require authentication?
    • Are these external/internal feeds?
    • Can you successfully display the feeds outside of the RSS web part?
    • If you're accessing via a proxy server, are you using an account which has rights?

  • Hi Paul,

    1. I am not sure about authentiation for the feeds.

    2. All are external feeds.

    3. Yes able to display the feeds outside the RSS web part.

    4. I am using System account (admin).

Note: RSS feeds works fine for sometimes but after somtime its throwing the protocol error and if restart the server again the feed works fine.

Could u please tell me is that because of network problem or do i need to configure som proxy settings in Central Admin?

Already proxy address configured in Central Admin --> Farm Search Administration --> Farm level search Settings -->Proxy Server

and  also proxy configured for Search service Application.

  • This looks like a network issue, If this works for some time and suddenly fails. Try to observer the Event viwer, if you notice something related to network.

  • I solved this just by changing my feed's protocol from https:// to http://
